WIELORYB Z LORINO (THE WHALE FROM LORINO)

“Why and for what do people come into this world?” Asks the teacher. “To eat,” is the pupil’s reply. What he mainly eats in Chukotka, where the harsh winters last for ten hard months, is whale.

A sensitive documentary about life in the farthest north-east of Russia. Home of the Chukchi, one of the oldest Siberian tribes, where the only remaining source of life, the only chance for survival, is whaling.

Jury statement (Christian Berger)

The camera succeeds in observing very sensitively and precisely, with patience and empathy. The film does not provide any commentary or explanations, it finds situations and metaphors and no “sensations” with “formally” beautiful images – it finds the people and the content and: it lets us discover and see all this for ourselves!
