ERDE

Several billion tons of earth are moved annually by humans – with excavators, drills or dynamite. Nikolaus Geyrhalter observes people in mines and quarries, at large construction sites and in coal mining areas in their constant efforts to subdue the planet and appropriate its raw materials: an inventory of humanity as the most important factor influencing the fundamental and irrevocable changes to their home planet.

JURY STATEMENT

Through some carefully arranged tableaux, that are depicted from a slightly elevated point of view and without context, the film unfolds an almost meditative effect. The frugal and formally strict mise-en-scène finds images of great beauty even in the destruction of manmade landscapes.
