THE FARMER AND THE HIPSTER

In 2019, Styrian farmer Christian Bachler invited Florian Klenk, editor-in-chief of the weekly magazine Falter, to an internship on his mountain farm via social media. The catalyst was an article by Klenk on a judgement that divided the country. Klenk accepted and immersed himself in Bachler’s world. The film shows squabblers becoming friends who talk about climate change, the meat industry, agricultural policy and banks. When Bachler’s farm faces ruin and foreclosure by the bank at the end of 2020, Klenk finds 13,000 people via crowdfunding within two days who donate over €400,000 and Bachler is debt-free. The film takes a ruthlessly honest look at agriculture today.
