MADRE MAR

In the Sado estuary in Portugal, seawater
flows fiercely through the veins of local peo –
ple. They’ve worked these waters for hun-
dreds of years, coexisting with the dolphins,
fish, and shellfish supported by the region’s
rich seagrass meadows. Then the big indus-
try arrived—bringing with it the devastating
practice of bottom trawling and its indiscrim-
inate scouring of the seafloor. In this film, we
follow Portuguese cooperative Ocean Alive
on its journey to protect this precious sea-
grass habitat from total destruction.
